Yeah there are a bunch of tools out there, avidemux is one of the easier to simply install and run. I am going to look at "mediacoder" tonight, but I wonder if you have any other suggestions? Xvid4PSP - Looks nice, but I havn't got it working yet. But the resulting output is MKV and ideally I would like to keep it MP4/AVI so that its compatible with the PS3. Mp42mkvac3 - Its very basic with almost no options, and just does one job. AVIdemux has some powerful 'scripting' tools, but its too complicated to learn for the occasional time I would need this. Ideally I would like something that I could load in a list of files and 'batch' convert them. I also noticed that there is an option to output MP4 and MP4v2? Do you know what these are? As rule of thumb, should I make the output container the same as the input? If so I need to work out why outputting as MP4 gives an error.ĭo you know of any other tools which do the same thing. One thing which confused me was that one of the files started as an MP4, but when I set the output to MP4, I got an error, so I had to go AVI instead. I don't understand why this happened as I left the video as "copy" so I will try a few more tests. But one of the videos I created will play, but you can't fast-forward through it, so I am a bit nervous as I need something I can trust, as I don't want to delete the original files and then find the 'converted' version is corrupt. I tried AVIdemux and had a few crashes to start with, but got it working and its fine.
